Reaching the Seniors through new Dimensions

July 1999

Lori J. Schmitt R.N

Co-host of The Senior Connection Radio Show

It was the 1950's and television was still a new medium. Some of our very fortunate neighbors even had color television sets by the end of that decade. Besides the radio and local newspaper, television was how we managed to keep abreast of what was happening in our world. It was an exciting time in America. Many of us can remember gathering around a 21-inch black and white television set to watch wrestling or maybe the news. Although our choices were somewhat limited, we were actually able to see the voices that kept us informed and entertained on those cold Cleveland nights. Not a lot has changed except we have ten times as many radio stations, and nearly thirty times as many television stations. What we didn't have was a dedicated show for Seniors that kept them informed of changes in Health care, government issues, leisure time activities and finances. Last week that changed for seniors in Northeast Ohio. While WELW was able to bring you the first truly dedicated Senior Radio Show, Cablevision now introduces that same format on channels 24 and 45. Now seniors in over 100 different communities can tune in at 7:00PM on Tuesday's, 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM on Wednesdays and 5:00pm and 7:00pm on Thursdays to watch the Senior Connection radio show. Seniors can also take advantage of the senior driven articles in The Words to the Wise newspaper and access the Senior Connection website at seniors-connection. com. We've come along way in the information age but for the first time we have actually begun to address Seniors on an individualized basis by bringing them programming that directly impacts their lives in four different media alternatives! The Senior Connection hosts gratefully acknowledge the many sponsors and listeners that we have had over the last two and a half years and look forward to bringing you the same quality programming in yet another media alternative. Cablevision, WELW, Words to the Wise, and the Senior Connection are committed to continue to deliver programming that will enhance your next 50 years!

For suggestions for future shows, please write us in care of Words to the Wise newspaper at WELW radio. We are now scheduling our remote broadcasts that will be televised on Cablevisions community access channel. This is the time to give your senior center the recognition it deserves! Contact WELW radio at 440-946-1330 to book your senior center for a remote broadcast.
