Michael F. Roizen, MD is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College and Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He performed his residency in internal medicine at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital and completed a tour of duty in the Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Irv Kopin and Nobel Prize winner Julius Axelrod. He is certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is 58 calendar years of age, but his RealAge is 40.6 years.
Dr. Roizen is past chair of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee and a former editor for six medical journals. He has published more than 155 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials, and four medical books, including a medical bestseller, which has been translated into 13 languages. After nine years on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, he started and served as medical director of the Chicago Program for Executive Health as well as chaired the top 10 rated department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He then became Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice-President for Biomedical Sciences at SUNY Upstate. He is now CEO of The Biotechnology Research Corporation of Central New York.
His first lay book, RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be? (Harper Collins), became a New York Times #1 Bestseller and was awarded the Best Wellness Book of 1999 by the Books for a Better Life Awards. RealAge has been translated into 22 languages, and achieved #1 status in four other countries. His second lay book, written with Dr. John La Puma, The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat (Harper Collins), also became a New York Times Bestseller in April 2001. He followed this with a third book, Cooking the RealAge Way (Harper Collins), also written with Dr. La Puma. Dr. Roizen’s most recent book is The RealAge Makeover, released by Harper Collins in April 2004.
Dr. Roizen has given over 1,000 lectures to professional medical groups and has been recognized with over 20 professional lectureships. Dr. Roizen has appeared on Oprah four times, the Today show 10 times, 20/20, Good-Morning America, and Montel, as well as CBN, CNN, CBS, and PBS. He has been featured in Fortune, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, Reader’s Digest, Men’s Health, and Prevention.
Dr. Roizen continues to practice both anesthesiology and internal medicine and uses the RealAge metric to motivate his patients. He has personally delivered medical care to 8 Nobel Prize winners, 340 previous smokers, over 100 Fortune 500 CEOs and CFOs, and countless others. Since 1989, he has continually been listed in the Best Doctors in America. His wife is a developmental pediatrician also listed in the Best Doctors in America. The Roizens have two children: Jenny, a recent graduate of Williams and current PhD graduate student at CalTech, and Jeffrey, an MD/PhD student at Washington University.
